About

Sergio Duro, black & grey realism and fine line tattoo artist in Mulhouse

I’m a Spanish tattoo artist with 12 years’ experience and two specialities: black & grey realism (portraits, animals, nature) and fine line. My background is in drawing, which remains the foundation of every piece. I work in Mulhouse, France, at the Cœur de Vaurien studio, by appointment only.

From charcoal to ink

Before tattooing, there was drawing. Charcoal taught me what I now apply to skin: shaping volume with light, committing to deep blacks and protecting the highlights.

In 2014 my charcoal drawing Huérfanos de guerra (‘War Orphans’) won first prize at the XV Certamen Nacional de Dibujo ‘Felipe Orlando’ in Benalmádena, southern Spain. I have also drawn charcoal pieces on commission. You can see my drawings and paintings on @sergioduroart.

Twelve years in the trade

For several years I worked on the Costa del Sol, between Málaga and Benalmádena, including at Infinity Tattoo. In 2017 I tattooed at the Málaga Tattoo Convention. Some clients would travel from Seville, Córdoba or Barcelona for a session.

I then worked as a guest artist in Ålesund, Norway, in 2023. I am now based in Mulhouse, in southern Alsace, close to both the Swiss and German borders.

Black & grey realism and fine line

My two specialities are black & grey realism and fine line. In realism, that means portraits, animals (including memorial portraits of pets), nature and landscapes, religious and classical statues, and darker realism when the subject lends itself to it. You can see the range in my portfolio.

Fine line is about fine, precise linework: flowers, faces, memorial pieces, often lifted with delicate shading or dotwork, like this bouquet of peonies on the shoulder. I also tattoo floral designs, mandalas and ornamental work, blackwork and blackout (solid black, which also works for cover-ups), anime and other styles on request, and I occasionally add a touch of colour on a black & grey base. Cover-ups and reworks of older tattoos are part of my work too.

What I don’t do: colour realism, Māori or Polynesian work and neo-traditional, and I never copy another artist’s tattoo. If your idea calls for a style that isn’t mine, I would rather tell you from the start.

How I work

I review every request myself. I design for your body: the area, its shape, the way it moves. An image simply pasted onto a forearm or shoulder often loses its impact; adapted to the anatomy, it gains depth.

Straight advice is worth more than a promise I can’t keep. If the size is too small for the level of detail you want, or the placement doesn’t serve the image, I will tell you and suggest another approach, even if that means turning down a project I know won’t age well.

Realism takes time. Many pieces are completed in one long session of roughly four to eight and a half hours: a lighthouse, for example, took about seven hours straight. Larger projects are spread over several appointments.

How a tattoo ages

A realistic tattoo should be judged once it has healed, not as you leave the studio. That is why I also show healed pieces, both in the portfolio and on Instagram: what counts is how it looks a month from now, and ten years from now.

In black & grey, everything depends on contrast: solid blacks, well-placed greys and areas of skin left bare. Over the years ink spreads slightly in the skin, so a design that is too fine or too busy eventually loses definition.

Back in 2017 I explained publicly that fine line drawn too thin and too tight does not age as well as bolder work. That is why I design my fine line pieces with lines spaced far enough apart and a size that suits the level of detail, and I will recommend the structure that gives your tattoo the best chance of staying sharp over the years.

Where to find me

I tattoo at the Cœur de Vaurien studio, 10 rue Poincaré, 68100 Mulhouse, France, by appointment only. To send me a project, use the request form: it gives me everything I need to assess it.

Spanish is my native language and I also speak French and English, so the choice of language is yours.

Professional information: in December 2025 I completed the mandatory French training in hygiene and sanitation for tattooing (approved provider: Corpstech Formation), certified by the ARS Grand Est, the regional health authority, on 28 January 2026. My tattooing practice was declared to the ARS Grand Est on 2 June 2026 (acknowledgement dated 5 June 2026). Before every tattoo, I give you written information on risks, contraindications and aftercare.
